Getting your hair done is a fun way to change your look and an important step in maintaining healthy hair. But if you pick the wrong stylist, you may end up with a look you hate. Here are a few tips for choosing the right stylist and how to tell him or her exactly what you’re looking for. 

Do Research on Salons First

Are you looking for a traditional type of hairstyle? Or are you going for something new and trendy? Salon websites should give you a good idea of what their stylists’ focus is in addition to what color lines they carry. If you’re going for a color change, look for color artists. 

Schedule a Consultation

Consultations are usually free and give you a chance to interview a stylist. You will also be able to pick up on the vibe of the salon. He or she should ask questions regarding how much time you want to spend on your hair, texture, and aesthetic choices. They should want to look at your face shape and skin color to get an idea of cuts and colors that suit you best.

Remember, you’re allowed to ask questions! Ask the stylist what continuing education classes they may be taking. Ask what look he or she likes most. Are they trendy or traditional? 

Use Your Powers of Observation

Pay attention to the way the stylist is dressed. Is he or she presentable? Is it similar to the style you like, or is the style relevant to the haircut you want? What is his or her age? You don’t want to go to a more traditional, older stylist if you want a Mohawk or undercut.

A good stylist should be able to tell you if a certain cut or shape will not look good for you, and recommend something similar that will. 

Don’t Be Afraid To Speak Up

If you’re unsure of something the stylist is doing during the session, by all means speak up! Maybe he or she wants to take off more hair than you’re willing to part with, or maybe you want to see the color before it’s applied. Just remember, they did recommend a certain look for a reason. Try to keep an open mind.

After the appointment, ask yourself if you’re happy with the experience. Do you love your new look? Did the stylist do a good job listening to what you asked for? Did they follow through?
